The Villa of the Mysteries frieze — 29 life-size figures painted against saturated cinnabar red around a single room — is the most complete surviving Roman narrative wall-painting. This design system channels that monumental fresco tradition: Pompeian red as the dominant page ground, cream lime-plaster panels for content, imperial gold for ornament, and classical inscription serifs that echo carved Roman capitals.
Every surface carries the material memory of mineral pigment on wet plaster — the grain of cinnabar, the warmth of aged lime, the ochre-brown outlines that give figures their weight. The catastrophe of Vesuvius preserved these colors for two millennia; this system treats that preservation as a design principle.
