About Outland (1981)

Outland is Peter Hyams' 1981 "High Noon in space" — a near-totally-dark mining colony on Jupiter's moon Io, rendered in riveted dark-gray steel, hexagonal connecting tubes, and fire-control doors. Production designer Philip Harrison built a dehumanizing industrial outpost lit by dim work lamps.

The signature is yellow-and-black hazard striping slashed across grimy metal, with green-phosphor CRT consoles glowing in the gloom. This system turns that utilitarian, blue-collar future into a dark, functional, stencil-and-mono UI.
