About Ossetian Nart Felt
Ossetian felt is not printed, woven or drawn. Mountain-sheep fleece cut in late summer is rolled and fulled into a sheet, then a second, darker sheet is cut up and pieced into it. The seam is the only line there is.
The language names three felts — sau, urs, cъæх: black, white, grey. On the undyed grey-oatmeal ground go the Nart saga's horses and its three-legged fyng, set inside ram's-horn spirals and solar signs that run back through Alan, Sarmatian and Koban work.
