Norwegian Stave Church

Norwegian stave churches are the great survivors of medieval timber building: load-bearing pine frames brushed with pine tar over centuries until the wood oxidised to a deep brown-black. Their tiered, shingled roofs rise like dragon spines, finials curl into open jaws, and carved portals braid Viking interlace into Christian story. This system speaks that register — tarred timber-brown over near-black ground, sturdy carved letterforms, and the slow gloom of a northern nave.
