About Kuba Raffia Cloth (Congo)关于 Kuba Raffia Cloth (Congo)

Kuba raffia cloth is central Africa's most geometrically sophisticated textile, woven on vertical looms from raffia-palm-leaf fiber by the Kuba Kingdom of modern Democratic Republic of Congo and embellished with cut-pile, plush, and appliqué embroidery in irregular squares, parallelograms, herringbone, and asymmetric color-blocks.

Picasso, Matisse, Braque, the Bauhaus, and Paul Klee all cited Kuba cloth as ground for their abstract-geometric vocabularies. The aesthetic principle is deliberate: a perfect symmetry is incomplete, and the small irregularity is the mark of life. The palette stays strictly earth-tone — cream raffia ground, chocolate brown, rust, ochre, umber.

The Kuba Raffia Cloth (Congo) design system traces back to Continuous Kuba Kingdom tradition since early 17c (Shyaam aMbul aNgoong, c. 1620); peak production 1700s–1900s; active living tradition through 20c into present Democratic Republic of Congo — Kasai region (Kasai-Occidental and Kasai-Oriental provinces); Kuba Kingdom capital at Mushenge / Nsheng. Key figures behind it include Shyaam aMbul aNgoong, Emil Torday, William Sheppard, and Joseph Cornet. It belongs to the Central African textile traditions, 20c European Modernism's geometric-abstract reception of African textile, and Contemporary African-design + global-craft cross-pollination movements.
