About Prishtina National Library
Mutnjaković did not design a library building. He designed ninety-nine of them and pushed them together: cast concrete cubes, white plaster inside, each one capped by its own translucent acrylic dome, each dome a different size, the whole cluster sitting in a loose honeycomb rather than a grid.
Over all of it goes a grey aluminium hexagonal net. People read it as a fishing net, as filigree, as a veil. It is also, plainly, a sunshade. The building lands on lists of the world's ugliest buildings and on lists of its masterpieces with roughly equal frequency, and both camps are describing the same façade.
