Gutai was the radical postwar collective that turned the act of painting into performance — bodies crashing through paper, feet dragged through pigment, paint fired from cannons. Founded by Jirō Yoshihara in 1954 Ashiya, the group demanded that material and gesture become inseparable from meaning.
This system channels that raw encounter: sumi-black grounds absorb single vermilion sweeps, massive asymmetric compositions leave half the canvas empty, and every surface carries the grain of hand-made paper and pigment cracking. The interface itself becomes a trace of the act that made it.
