About Harar House Interior

The gidir gar is the great room of a Harari house: floor and tiered nädäba platforms coated in qeh afar, red earth, re-laid so often that the red becomes the plane you live on. Above it, a band of white lime. Between them, eleven recessed taqet niches.

The niches are crowded on purpose. Coiled ge mot baskets in the four named colours — red, green, yellow, black — stack against imported porcelain and enamel. This is a status record kept in public, and the room reads as dense, radial, and hand-made.
