About Dungan Settlement Craft

In 1877 several thousand Shaanxi and Gansu Hui crossed the Tian Shan in winter and rebuilt their villages inside Russian Semirechye. What they built there is not a transplant and not a fusion — it is Qing carpentry doing its job on someone else's street. The Karakol mosque of 1907–1910 is a nail-free timber hall with bracketed dougong eaves and an upswept hip-and-gable roof, sitting on Russian brick footings.

The palette comes off that building: a cream lime-plaster wall carrying a brush-painted diamond lattice, butter-ochre columns, deep petrol-teal carved eaves, crimson posts and a mythical-animal yellow. Chinese characters sit above Cyrillic, stacked, both official.
