Chicago house was born in a dark room. In 1984 Frankie Knuckles was spinning reel-to-reel edits at The Warehouse and Trax Records was pressing 12-inch singles onto thin black vinyl. The look that grew around it was never designed — it was photocopied: Xerox-grain flyers, smudged sleeve type, the acid-house smiley burning yellow in a strobe-lit black club.
