About Pathein Parasol
Pathein sits in the Irrawaddy delta and makes the parasols the rest of Myanmar buys. Split Tin-wah and Thara Khu cane becomes ribs in 18–20 inch strips, a Ma Tu Shwe Wa handle is turned on a lathe, and cotton or paper is stretched over the frame and sealed with coats of oil or lacquer.
Two registers share the same frame. Monks and nuns carry a plain saffron canopy; nuns' parasols are painted red. The market parasol is hand-painted with lotus, peacock and flowering vines, one motif per panel, repeated around the circle. This system takes its structure from the frame and its color from the canopy.
