About Botswana Coiled Basket
Around Etsha and Gumare, on the flood edge of the Okavango, Bayei and Hambukushu women build baskets from mokola palm — strips boiled with bark and root, dried, then wound around a fibre core. One basket takes weeks; some take years.
The patterns are not decoration. Giraffe's Tears, Forehead of the Zebra, Running Ostrich, Ribs of the Giraffe — each band is named, and each name travels with the work. Because the coil advances one turn per revolution, the bands never close back on themselves. This system inherits that: straw ground, dye-bath browns, motifs that step out of register on purpose.
