Bodoni is Giambattista Bodoni's Parma type of c.1798, codified in the posthumous 1818 Manuale Tipografico — the defining Didone, built on extreme thick/thin contrast, flat unbracketed hairline serifs and a strictly vertical axis. Cool, rational and severe, it broke with the old-style calligraphic serif to become a monument of Enlightenment printing. Its living identity is the luxury fashion masthead: hairline white Bodoni reversed on solid black, the face of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. This system renders the typeface as the black cover-ground it now defines — oversized reversed logotype, tiny tracked-out coverlines, a single gilt hairline, and negative space treated as luxury.
