Balinese Barong Mask (1920)

ProMax

The Barong is Bali's supreme protective spirit — a gilded lion-dragon mask carved from sacred pule wood, embellished with gold leaf, ruby-glass mirrors, and horsehair, then danced against the demon queen Rangda in temple courtyards at every village festival. This design system draws from the 1920s Dutch-era photographs that first codified the Barong's iconic image for the world.

Deep temple-night black grounds recall the oil-lamp-lit courtyard. Gold leaf, ruby glass, and emerald embroidery provide the chromatic language. Cinzel's carved monumental capitals echo the mask-maker's chisel, while Cormorant Garamond lends the body text a ceremonial gravity befitting ritual drama.
