The USAF squadron patch is unit identity stitched in thread: a round twill disc with a merrowed overlock border, bearing a snarling cartoon predator and spread wings, sewn onto seal-brown horsehide A-2 or sage MA-1 flight-jacket leather. From the jet age through Vietnam, these were embroidered in saturated satin-stitch — tiger, panther, demon, eagle — each outlined in black thread against bold high-contrast color. This is a system built on that craft: leather ground, thread texture, and characterful hand-drawn mascots, never flat clean vector. Disney famously designed many wartime insignia; theater-made pieces from Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand gave the tradition its raw, hand-sewn charm.
