Avant Garde Gothic

Avant Garde Gothic is the stark black-and-white display environment of Herb Lubalin's Avant Garde magazine (1968–71) and the ITC specimen pages — an upper-case geometric sans born from a magazine masthead, carrying interlocking ligatures and tight alternates.

This system distills that severe editorial voice: oversized geometric caps set impossibly tight on a solid black ground, near-white display type, and a single hot-red accent used with surgical restraint. The page is the specimen sheet.

Avant Garde Gothic 源自赫伯·卢巴林（Herb Lubalin）的《Avant Garde》杂志（1968–71）与 ITC 字样标本页：一款由杂志刊名演变而来的全大写几何无衬线体，由卢巴林与汤姆·卡纳斯于 1970 年为 ITC 设计，带有一整套相互咬合的连字与紧凑替换字形。其视觉语言极其严苛——黑白对比强烈，字距与 字偶间距压到极致。

本设计系统提炼了这种凌厉的编辑气质：超大几何大写字母以极紧的间距压在纯黑底面之上，配以近白的 展示字与克制至极的一抹热红。整个页面就是一张字样标本页：纯黑底色、近白巨型标题、稀疏而有力的 红色重音，绝不松散、绝不柔和。
