About Zabid Brick Lattice
Zabid built its ornament out of the wall itself. Fired brick is laid in relief and openwork courses — turned, recessed, omitted — until the facade reads as lattice, then white gypsum is trowelled over the fired clay as the figure colour. Bands stack horizontally up the wall, each a different pattern, separated by a plain course.
The street face is deliberately bare; everything is spent on the interior. This system keeps that logic: a quiet buff-ochre page, a plain outer frame, and dense rectilinear ornament in the middle where the reader actually is. Depth is not decoration here — every motif casts a hard shadow because every motif is a physical recess.
