About Weekly Shōnen Jump
Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump is a 450-page block of recycled pulp sold for about ¥300 and made to be thrown away. The ground is dull yellowish-grey stock with show-through from the reverse; the ink is black line art, screentone and speed lines; the only loud colour is a high-visibility yellow masthead band with black type sitting on it.
This system takes that object literally: pulp ground, heavy black rules, panels that tilt and break the frame, vertical right-to-left text columns, and yellow used only as a filled block — never as type on the paper.
