Kīlauea is an active basaltic shield volcano on Hawaiʻi, where lava moves as smooth ropy pāhoehoe and rough ʻaʻā. As the surface cools it forms a near-black basalt crust cracked by glowing fissures — color encoding temperature from yellow-white through orange to a dark cooling red. This system turns that thermal gradient into an interface language: matte dark ground, molten seams, ember scatter. Every glowing element earns its light against the crust.
