Vans Checkerboard (1966)

ProMax

Vans Checkerboard is the pattern kids drew on their own slip-ons before Vans ever printed it: a hard black-and-white grid, waffle-sole grip, and the blunt confidence of Southern California skate culture. Born in a 1966 Anaheim rubber shop and burned into pop memory when it hit the deck-park and the screen in the early '80s, the checker is the whole design language. Everything sits on that grid — heavy condensed display type, hard-offset sticker shadows, thick 3px keylines like a screenprint that didn't quite register. No gradients, no softness, one pop of Vans red and nothing else. Off the wall, straight off the curb.
