Obsidian's visual identity is inseparable from its knowledge graph — a WebGL constellation of purple nodes pulsing against deep matte black, connected by silver hairline edges. Released in 2020 by a two-person team, the app became the defining tool of the local-first markdown era, and its aesthetic became shorthand for "networked thought."

The design language is monastic in its restraint: matte surfaces, Inter for everything, JetBrains Mono for code, and a single dominant purple that references the literal obsidian mineral. No gradients in the chrome, no decorative flourishes — just the quiet glow of linked ideas.
