About Nutrition Facts Label
The Nutrition Facts panel is the most-printed piece of information design in America. Burkey Belser drew it pro bono for the FDA, working through about thirty-five versions from 1992. It became mandatory in 1994: a white box, black Helvetica, and a heavy rule under Calories.
This system takes the panel's grammar as a design language. Rule weight carries the hierarchy, numbers sit flush right in tabular figures, and every block is boxed. Colour shows up only where the regulation stops.
