About Telemark Rosemaling
Telemark rosemaling is paint on planed pine — dowry chests, kubbestol log chairs, ale bowls, whole interior panels. The ground is Prussian blue thinned and extended with chalk because the pigment cost money, and over it sit oxide red, ochre and a muted leaf green in transparent glazes that never quite hide the wood.
The style is the asymmetric one. A single off-centre root throws C- and S-scrolls left and right in unequal weights, and the composition balances by mass rather than by mirroring. Bone-white highlights go on last, one stroke per pass, tapering to nothing.
