About Nelly Rudin Concrete

Nelly Rudin trained at the Basel Kunstgewerbeschule, drew for the Geigy pharmaceutical studio, and worked in Ernst Heiniger and Josef Müller-Brockmann's Zurich studio before turning the Swiss grid on objects instead of posters. Her picture-objects develop volume out of the flat surface: a plane is cut, hinged, turned and set into itself until it becomes a body.

The system takes her rule literally. Inner faces are white and dissolve into the wall; outer faces carry red, green, blue and yellow in fixed sequence. Nothing is tinted, nothing is blended, nothing is rounded. Every panel has a real side face and throws a real shadow.
