About Nagani Book Club
Nagani — နဂါးနီ, Red Dragon — ran out of a stall at Scott Market in Rangoon from November 1937 until the Japanese occupation closed it in 1941. In under four years it put 70 to 100 Burmese titles into readers' hands on cheap kraft board, priced so that a clerk or a student could buy one.
The look is what a jobbing press could do fast: buff wrappers, fat outlined Burmese titles boxed in triple rules, the imprint knocked out white from a solid black bar at the foot, and the coiled flaming naga stamped in orange-red. Nothing is decorative that isn't also structural.
