About Mawson's Hut Expedition
The Main Hut at Cape Denison is 7.3 metres square: Oregon pine framing, Baltic pine tongue-and-groove cladding, tarred paper and hessian against the wind, copper nails salvaged from the wreck of the *Clyde*. Eighteen men worked and slept inside it through the windiest place on earth.
This system takes its surfaces from that interior — boarding darkened by blubber smoke, buff survey paper tacked to the wall, pencil in the margins, typewriter figures in the meteorological log, and a thin glaze of frost along every seam. It is a working archive, lit by one acetylene lamp, not a wilderness poster.
