About Mastodon Fediverse Elephant (2017)
Mastodon is the decentralized alternative to corporate social media — a violet-branded, elephant-mascoted network of thousands of independent instances speaking ActivityPub. Founded in 2016 by Eugen Rochko in Germany, its visual identity deliberately rejects Twitter's corporate blue for a distinctive violet, friendly cartoon mascots, and dense timeline layouts built for longer-form conversation.
The design system captures the feeling of scrolling a federated timeline at midnight: deep dark surfaces, glowing violet interaction chrome, monospace instance domains, and rounded post cards stacked in a single generous column. It's technical but approachable, subcultural but welcoming.
