About Malay Kampung House
The rumah kampung stands on hardwood stilts, its chengal and meranti frame wedged together without a single nail so the whole house can be lifted and carried to new ground. Air and shadow live underneath. A long pitched roof of nipah thatch throws deep shade, and below the eaves run kerawang — pierced panels carved through the timber so glare arrives as filtered light.
This system takes that logic literally. Everything sits on visible supports with darkness beneath it. Ornament is a hole, never a drawing. The palette is bare oiled wood, not palace paint.
