About Hyperpop 100 gecs (2019)
Hyperpop crystallized the moment 100 gecs dropped *1000 gecs* in May 2019 — a 25-minute album that sounded like a corrupted MP3 was the point. Dylan Brady and Laura Les crashed ska, EDM, and Soundcloud-emo into compressed-to-distortion drums and pitch-shifted vocals, breaking every streaming-platform genre tag in the process. Spotify launched its "Hyperpop" playlist in August 2020, and a generation of bedroom producers followed.
Visually the movement is ironic-cute Y2K nostalgia cranked to eleven: MS Paint collages, Lisa Frank color saturation, sparkle-glitter PNG overlays, intentional JPEG artifacts, and clipart chaos stacked on pure black backgrounds. The aesthetic says "the year is 2003 and your AOL profile is on fire."
