About Racing Form Guide
The Sporting Times went to press on pink paper in 1865 for the dullest of reasons — under-bleached stock was cheaper — and the tint stuck. The Pink 'Un became the badge of racing journalism, copied by the Financial Times in 1893 and echoed by the Sheffield Star's green Saturday sheet.
What the tint carried was density: past-performance tables set at roughly 5.5pt in narrow ruled columns, weights and form figures right-aligned, jockey and trainer abbreviated to the bone. Jockey silks — flat, two-colour, thumbnail-sized — were the only colour allowed on the sheet.
