About Gotland Picture Stone
Gotland's picture stones are limestone slabs cut to a mushroom silhouette with a narrow neck, raised across the Baltic island through the Vendel and Viking periods. Their faces divide into stacked horizontal registers of shallow relief — an eight-legged horse met with a drinking horn, a longship whose sail is nearly as wide as its hull is long.
The system takes its discipline from that reading order and its palette from the stone as it survives: pale grey, lichen-mottled, frost-worn. Contrast stays low on purpose. The imagery emerges with the light, and the design does not pretend otherwise.
