Biopunk took cyberpunk's argument and moved it inside the skin. Where the console was, there is now a bench; where the implant was, there is a culture flask. Michael Swanwick's *Vacuum Flowers* gave the genre its word — wetware — and the DIYbio labs that followed gave it a real look to document.
So this system is documented, not invented. Near-black grounds with a green cast, the greens and cyans of GFP and a transilluminator, the pink of fresh phenol-red medium going amber as it acidifies. Light comes out of the content, never down from above.
