About Surf Life Saving Australia
Surf Life Saving Australia is a signalling system with a sport attached. Its colours are not chosen, they are specified: patrol yellow and equipment red to Pantone, blue for information, black for type, on a white powder-coated plate.
The design object here is the sign board staked at the top of the beach — flush rectangular panels, heavy pictogram silhouettes, imperative captions in condensed caps. Nothing tilts, nothing fades. Colour is a coded field, and the reader is a hundred metres away with salt in their eyes.
