Grisaille Painting

Grisaille is the painter's discipline of modeling an entire world in cool neutral grays — no color, only value — to make paint imitate carved stone. Jan van Eyck made it canonical on the exterior shutters of the Ghent Altarpiece, where saints stand as if hewn from stone.

This design system distills that achromatic relief tradition: a mid stone-gray ground, a full value ladder from deep shadow to white highlight, and the signature cool Payne's-gray midtone. Volume comes from chiaroscuro, never from hue.

灰色画（Grisaille）是画家以冷调中性灰塑造整幅画面的技法——不用色彩，只用明暗——让油彩伪装成雕刻石材。扬·凡·艾克在根特祭坛画的外侧屏板上将其奠定为典范，画中圣徒宛如石雕浮雕般肃立。

本设计系统提炼了这一无彩浮雕传统：以中调石灰为底，从深阴影到白色高光铺陈完整的明度阶梯，并以标志性的冷调佩恩灰为中间调。体积感全凭明暗对照（chiaroscuro）塑造，绝不依赖色相。整个方案严守冷灰，绝无暖褐、米白或奶油色。
