Which one should you pick?
Pick the DESIGN.md spec when you only need to encode one design system you already own — your own brand — and you are comfortable writing the file. The spec is the right home for that, and tools in Claude Code, Cursor, and Figma read it natively.
Pick a free community library — designmd.ai, designmd.app, or awesome-design-md — when cost is the priority and you are happy to copy files by hand and live with a smaller, mostly brand-focused, community-maintained set. Open Design is the self-hosted, BYOK option in the same spirit.
Hire a designer when the visual identity is the product and needs to be original — no library, ours included, replaces bespoke brand work at that level.
