Niko Pirosmani painted tavern signboards on black oilcloth in turn-of-the-century Tbilisi, trading his stags, deer, and feasting scenes for a meal or a half-bottle of wine. His flat color planes on deep-black grounds, frontal animal compositions, and candlelit warmth became Georgia's visual soul.
This system channels the dukhan back wall circa 1910: oilcloth black as the infinite ground, meadow ochre and chokha red emerging from darkness, serif type set with the gravity of hand-painted signboard lettering, and the austere symmetry of a self-taught icon-painter who never needed ornament.
