Shang-Zhou Ritual Bronze

Shang-Zhou ritual bronze is the ur-grammar of Chinese pattern — cast in metal 3300 years ago at the Anyang and Zhouyuan royal foundries, never surpassed for menacing density. Every surface bears the taotie mask, the leiwen thunder-spiral, the kuilong dragon, packed at horror-vacui density into a green-patinated bronze body.

The aesthetic insists every square millimeter be carved. Strict bilateral symmetry, raised flanges, registered bands, deep cast-shadow recesses. Compared with later Chinese ornament: older, heavier, more zoomorphic, less calligraphic — and cosmic-terrifying rather than decorative.

商周礼器青铜，是中国纹样的源头语法。三千三百年前的安阳殷墟与周原王室铸坊，用泥范法将饕餮兽面、雷文回纹、夔龙蝉鸟铸入礼器之身——鼎、簋、卣、爵、尊，用于祭祀祖先、沟通天人。

这套美学的核心是「满工」：每一寸铜面都必须刻满纹饰，留白即未完成。严格的左右对称、突起的扉棱、分段的纹带、深陷的阴影凹槽，构成一种森严而宇宙性的恐怖之美。它比唐宋纹样更古老、更厚重、更兽性，少了书法笔意，多了宗庙杀气——一切器物，皆是与神明对话的工具。
