Kalaga — shwe-chi-doe, "embroidery of golden thread" — is the raised, dimensional tapestry craft of the Konbaung court at Mandalay. Mythological Ramayana figures and celestial beings are padded with cotton wadding, outlined in couched gold metallic thread, and crusted with sequins against a deep black cotton-velvet ground. The effect is theatrical: glittering, jewelled, and unapologetically maximal.
