When the Bolsheviks shuttered the churches, the icon painters of Palekh village didn't stop painting — they turned to fairy tales. Founded in 1924 by Ivan Golikov and fellow masters, the Palekh Artel replaced saints with firebirds, troikas, and scenes from Pushkin, rendered in egg-tempera and gold leaf on black papier-mâché boxes lacquered to a mirror finish.
This design system captures the Palekh aesthetic: deep lacquer black as ground, gold-leaf accents for script and ornament, and jewel-bright crimson, lapis, and emerald for narrative figures — all composed within the tradition's signature oval cartouche frames.
