Argument — four observations

What the roofs remember.

I

A roof is slow weather, made visible.

Observation Rolled zinc arrives mirror-bright from the foundry; within four winters the carbonate has settled it into the same cool gray as the Seine in November.

II

The seam is the signature.

Craft Standing seams every sixty centimetres — the zinguer’s rhythm — give the boulevard its corduroy when read from the Hôtel de Ville at dusk.

III

Grey is not the absence of colour.

Light Under overcast cloud the patina yields six legible shades; beneath low winter sun it admits a faint, almost mineral lavender along the southern slope.

IV

The dormer is a small civic gesture.

Form A chambre de bonne tucked beneath the mansard — one window facing the courtyard, one the avenue — still houses students, painters, and an occasional clockmaker.
