Chapter 02 · The Art of Resist 05 / 12

What the Indigo Remembers

the deep blue of the earth's vat

Cassava paste, hand-laid

Fermented cassava starch hand-painted as resist — centuries of àdir̀e elẹ́kọ̀ technique carried in every line the artisan draws.

The indigo pit endures

Seven generations of Abeokuta dyers, the same fermented Lonchocarpus leaves, the same earthen vat — the deep blue does not forget its origin.

Pattern as proverb

Olokun curves, Ibadan-dun grids, Sun-Bebe script — each motif encodes a Yoruba saying worn directly on the body as living language.

Cloth meant for wrapping

Not displayed behind glass but folded and draped, meters of indigo cotton becoming a second language spoken through the body.
