The case for tactile interfaces

After a decade of glass slabs, the pendulum is swinging back toward physical controls. Here is why that matters.

Last winter I spent three weeks rebuilding a 1980s hi-fi amplifier. Not for nostalgia — the sound was mediocre at best — but because turning its weighted aluminium knobs felt like something I had been missing for years. Every click of the stepped attenuator was a small certainty in a world of glass.

The glass ceiling

Touchscreens solved a manufacturing problem, not a human one. A single sheet of ion-hardened glass replaces thirty injection-moulded buttons, five rotary encoders, and a dozen status LEDs — cheaper, thinner, waterproof. But the cost shows up elsewhere: in distracted drivers fumbling for climate controls, in pilots complaining about glassy flight decks, in the quiet frustration of trying to skip a track while running.

The best interface is the one you do not have to look at.

The counter-movement is already here. Tiny pocket synth operators. Reissued modular control panels. The entire mechanical keyboard renaissance. These are not retro exercises — they are evidence that touch matters, that our hands remember positions our eyes cannot see, that a detent at twelve o'clock communicates more than any haptic engine buzz.
