I spent the winter of 1992 inside a VectorCore Prism 4D/35, watching a rotating teapot cast shadows that didn't exist yet. The machine rendered at 12 frames per second on a good day, and every polygon was a negotiation between ambition and transistor. We didn't think of it as "retro" back then — it was simply the edge of what silicon could hold.

The wireframe mode was supposed to be a draft. A preview you clicked past on the way to shaded solids and ray-traced reflections. But the draft had its own gravity. Stripped of texture maps and Phong shading, the object revealed its skeleton: edge lists, vertex normals, the bare topology of form. You could see the math breathing.

Polygons We Left Behind

By 1996, Gouraud shading had smoothed every edge. The wireframe became a debug view, something engineers toggled when the normals flipped or the Z-buffer fought back. But a strange thing happened on the way to photorealism: the wireframe aesthetic escaped the lab. It showed up in music videos, in magazine layouts, in the title sequences of cyberpunk films that understood the grid wasn't just a visualization — it was a philosophy.
