How Crouwel’s rigid modular systems proved that freedom lives inside structure.

I spent two weeks in January reconstructing Crouwel’s 1967 New Alphabet on a 5×9 pixel grid. Not as a nostalgic exercise — as a diagnostic. Every curve I was forced to eliminate taught me something about what my own letterforms actually communicate. When you cannot rely on the elegance of a bézier, you discover the architecture underneath.

The Alphabet as Infrastructure

Crouwel understood something that most contemporary designers resist: the grid is not a cage. It is a coordinate system. His catalogues for a civic museum demonstrated this with brutal clarity. Twelve columns. Four type sizes. Three primary colors as structural markers, not decoration.

“The grid is liberation, not constraint.” The lesson still holds.
