III · The Ceremony in Four Movements

Four Salams, one turning.

أربعة سَلامات
I

Recognition of one's servitude المعرفة

The first salam begins on the slowest breath of the ney — the dervish, robed in white, bows once toward the hidden lamp at the lodge's centre.

II

Rapture in the order of stars المشاهدة

Arms unfold — right palm raised to receive grace, left palm lowered to give it on. The turn quickens against the Iznik dark.

III

Annihilation inside the love الفناء

The tennure opens to a full circle. Candle-gold pools on the skirt's hem; the figure is no longer wholly a figure.

IV

Return as a servant who turned العودة

The arms cross again over the chest. The spin slows, the ney exhales once, and the dervish stands once more upon the threshold.
