The case for drawing the pressure field by hand
Automated charts are fast, but the human line still finds the weather before the dashboard names it.
At 0600 last Tuesday, the western approaches were a mess of weak reports: two drifting buoys, a delayed coastal station, and a ship code copied through static. The model smoothed it into a polite trough. The pencil line did not.
When I pulled the 1008 isobar south of Rockall, the chart stopped looking tidy and started looking true. Three hours later the low deepened exactly where the paper had become crowded.
Standards are a form of attention
The old chart language is spare because it has to be. Cold-front triangles, warm-front semicircles, station circles, pressure tendencies: each mark earns its square millimeter, and the empty blue-grey field keeps the analyst honest.
