Last winter, we moved a desk from the west wall to the window and discovered that the room had been waiting for it. Nothing was replaced. Four shelf pins changed position, two books shifted down, and the afternoon work finally faced the light.

Arrangement is a continuing decision

The mistake is treating storage as a conclusion. A room collects changing work, guests, tools, and seasons; its supports should be as ready to move as the people who use them. The best systems make that adjustment feel ordinary rather than dramatic.
