The grid is not a cage. It is a decision.

A working system makes room for judgment, then asks every decision to answer.

In February, the Gridline editorial desk removed the last discretionary offset from its weekly report. Every headline, note, and caption returned to a shared column. The result was not a stricter page. It was a clearer argument about what deserved attention.

Consistency is editorial pressure

The change surfaced a useful tension. A grid does not decide the story; it makes the decision legible. When a line breaks or a number moves, the exception carries a cost—and that cost is precisely the point.
