Road signs are apublic service

A sign should return a driver to the road without doubt.

Last winter, I drove from Preston to Carlisle before dawn, when the rain makes every reflective surface feel louder. The names on the signs did not ask to be admired. They arrived at the exact moment I needed them, large enough to settle a decision before the next lane opened.

The work happens before the turn

That restraint is not absence of character; it is character put to work. Mixed-case lettering gives each word a shape, while the calm blue panel lets distance and direction do the talking. A good public system spends its personality on reducing everyone else’s effort.
