At the quay, a passage was announced in paper before it was announced in steam. The thick card in my glove carried a cabin number, a deck, and the quiet assurance that every detail had already been considered.
The ticket was the first room
In the booking office, Mr. Vale selected the blue-edged card as carefully as he chose his cabin. The clerk recorded his trunks in a ruled ledger; by luncheon, the same measured language had reached the menu, the porter’s tag, and the brass plate beside his door.
